Fab Pad

How do you fancy a Fab Pad?

Together with Elderpark HA, Linthouse HA and Communities Scotland, Govan HA is supporting and promoting the exciting new Fab Pad Project that has just started in Govan.  It is based at 27 Burleigh Street every Tuesday and Thursday from 2.00pm to 4.30pm.  Information on the aims of the Project are outlined below.  If you are interested, please contact Arlene Sanders, Senior Housing Officer on 440 0308 for a referral form.

Creating a stable future for homeless people

We asked Impact Arts, who manage the Fab Pad project, to explain it's purpose:

"Fab Pad focuses on a person's needs at a vital stage in their progression to an independent lifestyle, when he or she starts a new tenancy.

We offer the person the chance to work with an interior designer to get the ideas, and learn the skills to turn this new flat or house into their home. Through reducing the risk of tenancy breakdown by making them feel more ownership over their flat, the new tenants are able to stabilise their own life, and look to what they are going to do next - work, train or go to college.

Fab Pad work with over 100 young people per year across Glasgow, and many more across Scotland.  Most of the people involved may have been homeless for a long time, and have a history of problems linked to addiction, abuse, mental health and isolation from the family. Fab Pad work in a very flexible, non-judgemental way which allows people time and space to adjust to commitments and the responsibilities of managing a new house, and often a new life.  The elements of the programme are:

1. Referral meeting with young person
2. Home visit (Interior designer, and key worker)
3. Development of action plan  (related to flat and design ideas)
4. Start workshop programme  ( either at Fab Pad base or local venue)
5. Allocation of shopping budget (currently £100 per person)
6. Development of action plan (employment and training related)
7. Ongoing home visits from interior designer and workshop participation
8. Progression on to employment, training, further education or other    opportunities

Project activities
The interior design and tutor team work closely with participants to develop a plan for their flats, which is achievable (and allowed by the landlord). The resulting workshops are therefore varied and include:

· Developing a design plan for a room (s)
· Use of colour
· Paint effects
· Basic wall preparation
· Basic papering, painting and tiling
· Creating soft furnishings
· Mosaic and ceramic painting
· Creating accessories
· Use of lighting
· Furniture renovation and transformation
